At year-end 2021, our financial inclusion funds provided debt and equity to 111 financial service providers in Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. They provide a range of financial services to low-income people and small businesses and vary from small NGOs working in underdeveloped markets to fully-fledged banks and digital lending platforms.

Together, they reached 17.8 million borrowers, of which 78% are women, and 18.6 million savers.

Science Based Targets commitment and alignment

29% of the holding companies of our Impact Equities and Bond Funds are committed to or aligned with Science Based Targets. The data has been retrieved from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)’s public database of committed and aligned companies. Targets adopted by companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are considered science based if they are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement – to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

Triodos Investment Management wants to make impact the new standard in investing. For us money is not a means to an end but a powerful way of making a difference. This is fully embedded in the activities and approach of both our Impact Equities and Bond funds and our Impact Private Debt and Equity funds.

The following four pillars guide the investment process of each of our funds:

1. Positive impact

We drive progress by investing in themes that are key to helping society overcome systemic sustainability challenges. Each company we select for our portfolios must positively contribute to at least one of these themes through its commercial strategy.

2. Do no significant harm

We screen companies against our strict Triodos Minimum Standards to ensure they do not cause any significant harm. We review companies to avoid the risk that their business practices could jeopardise the sustainable transition we envision. Companies that do not meet the Triodos Minimum Standards are not eligible for investment.

3. Managing sustainability risk

We carefully monitor sustainability risks of our investments on people and planet (inside-out), while developing a quantitative and objective methodology for assessing sustainability risks of our investees (outside-in).

4. Investor contribution

We are an active and involved investor and integrate stewardship in every aspect of the investment management process to promote sustainable long-term value creation for all our stakeholders. We do this, amongst others, through engagement, voting and advocacy.
