The first phase of the construction of a hydrogen turbine will start in the Wieringermeer on the ECN Wind Turbine Testveld Wieringermeer. Hydrogen developer HYGRO can start building with the help of financing from Triodos Groenfonds and Triodos Bank, and sustainable investment institution Meewind. ENERCON supplies the wind turbine as part of the hydrogen production facility. This turbine is an important step in green hydrogen production. A hydrogen turbine is a wind turbine in which electrolysis is connected directly to the source. Thanks to this integration, the turbine can produce both green electricity and green hydrogen very efficiently.
First phase
In this first phase, the wind turbine will be realized, and the project development of the hydrogen production part will be completed. The wind turbine is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2021. With the arrival of the first hydrogen mill, an important step is being taken to make green hydrogen affordable.
Green hydrogen
This project will also demonstrate that in addition to the avoided energy losses, the electrolysis system itself is significantly more efficient than is currently accepted. Compared to the large-scale electrolysis plans connected to the electricity grid, much more hydrogen can be extracted from the wind energy, at a much lower cost. Thanks to both the efficiency gain and the use in transport, a lot of CO2 emissions are prevented, as well as noise, NOx and particulate matter emissions. Triodos Groenfonds co-finances the project.
